1. ESPN2 to air April 24 Blue-White game live

One of the nation's premier spring football events, Penn State's Blue-White Game presented by the American Automobile Association (AAA), will be televised live by ESPN2 on Saturday, April 24. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. in Beaver Stadium. As in previous years, there will be no admission or parking fee for the Blue-White game, which culminates spring practice for the Nittany Lions. The Blue-White Game also will air on the Penn State Sports Network and www.GoPSUsports.com. The Blue-White Game will be the first spring football game ESPN has televised among Big Ten Conference institutions.

2. Survey designed to help new Parents Program strengthen partnership

A studentâ€™s success in college is influenced by a number of factors - from personal motivation to the support and encouragement of others. Given that parent and family support is integral to student success, Student Affairs recently established the Penn State Parents Program. As its first initiative, this new program has partnered with Student Affairs Research and Assessment to explore the experiences and needs of Penn State parents. Parents and guardians of current University Park students are invited to participate in the Parents' Needs Assessment survey.

3. Penn State earns 60 winter Academic All-Big Ten honors

Sixty Nittany Lions student-athletes, representing seven winter sports, have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. Penn State's 60 honorees brings the Lions' all-time total to 3,262 during the last 16 years. The total ranks first among all Big Ten institutions. Including the 72 fall sports honorees, the Nittany Lions have 132 Academic All-Big Ten selections for the 2009-10 academic year.

4. Student reflects on consequences of alcohol-related 'bad choices'

Students who engage in underage or dangerous drinking may find themselves facing consequences much more serious than a hangover. Whether the behavior results in a citation or arrest by police, or is written up by Residence Life staff, students face the additional consequence of going through the Judicial Affairs process to determine whether or not they have violated the Code of Conduct.

5. 2010 Student Satisfaction survey sent out March 29

The 2010 Student Satisfaction survey will be sent to students soon, and Penn State looks forward to hearing what they have to say. A system-wide research survey is being conducted to gauge students' satisfaction with their campus location, the University, and the services offered here.

6. New club helps Penn State undergraduate students look for jobs

With graduation coming up quickly, many Penn State undergraduates are looking for jobs and opportunities. The Job Club, created to help those seniors who are looking for a job after May or August graduation, is a career counseling group that can help participants to develop and practice effective job search strategies. Through weekly meetings and outside assignments, students will learn how to network, where to look for jobs, how to become more active in the job search process, and more.

8. Scientists find new, inexpensive way to predict Alzheimer's disease

Your brain's capacity for information is a reliable predictor of Alzheimer's disease and can be cheaply and easily tested, according to Michael Wenger, associate professor of psychology. "We have developed a low-cost behavioral assessment that can clue someone in to Alzheimer's disease at its earliest stage," he said. "By examining (information) processing capacity, we can detect changes in the progression of mild cognitive impairment."

9. Research explores edible film that kills pathogens for meat packaging

A team of food scientists in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences has shown that an edible film can be used for wrapping ready-to-eat meat products to deliver a slow release of a naturally occurring antimicrobial agent capable of killing a foodborne pathogen.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified individuals 24 years of age and younger as high risk for contracting H1N1 influenza. Penn State's University Health Services now has a limited supply of H1N1 nasal spray vaccine available for students in this high risk group.

1. Help your student inform faculty about flu-related absences

If your student is unable to attend class because of illness, he or she
should consult the syllabus for each course. The syllabus will indicate how
faculty wish to be informed when students are unable to attend class. Where
this information is unavailable, your student should send an email to each
instructor. In this email the student should inform the instructor that he or
she is unable to attend class and give an indication of how much class time
they expect to miss. Giving instructors advance notice of absences is very
important since the University Health Service does not provide written excuses
for students to take to instructors. Instructors' email addresses are
available on the Penn State Directory at http://www.psu.edu/ph/.

2. H1N1 Update: Sept. 29, 2009

University Health Services (UHS) saw more than 250 students for
influenza-like illness (ILI) during the last week of September. Although the
number of students receiving medical care remains high, many students with ILI
can usually manage their illness without seeing a health care provider.
However, students who are pregnant, have significant underlying health
conditions such as asthma or diabetes or are immune-compromised are at risk
for developing complications from H1N1 influenza and should contact their
health care provider if they have symptoms of the flu or have been exposed to
the flu.
